If you look across 2nd Street Crossing, right where the track turns east(right), you can see the spot where the track originally went straight across both the GTW and B&O at grade. This was the C&O's line to New Buffalo, MI. I am not sure exactly when, but CSXT put in a loop track that turned west from the branch to the B&O main so that trains coming from the old Wabash Subdivision could use the B&O to access Chicago. Amtrak used this route for a while. I rode this line from New York City to Chicago sometime in the 1970's and I didn't even know this was the route the Cardinal used until about 5 or 6 years ago! |
